Title: Front wheel fork axle?
Post by: Bob91403 on July 28, 2010, 06:08:08 PM
I'm interested in using a front wheel Magic Pie. Does anyone know if it will work with a fork that is made for a 20mm thru axle? Is there some kind of adapter needed? ???

The outside diameter of the front wheel MP is 0.513 inches (13.03mm)

You will need some kind of adapter, but you will also need some kind
of torque arm because the through axle clamp will probably not
hold the threaded axle very well even with an adapter.

I don't know of any adapter and I would probably stay clear of anything that isnt a certain.  The torque applied by an MP on an adapted anchor point like Duane has said will need a good torque arm and I would be concerned about doing such a thing to front forks.

The MP or the ones I have seen have a flat edge on the two sides of the axle that help axle hold strong in the droputs.  In essence the GM axles are 10mm y and 20mm x so what ever you use will have to be a sleeve that fits onto the fork to narrow the dropout still sounds if'y.

Maybe you could sit the axle in the fork on the flat edge of the axel. With some careful filing of the fork dropout you can make is flat so the flat axle edge and fork dropout seat is flush, then rig up an awesome torque arm to take the spin.

Oh my bad.  I don't usually deal with axles and stuff.  My bad advice below please ignore.

The GM axles are 15mmx10mm. Not 20mm to 10mm.

This make a big difference.

You can get a high tensile nut and cut it to 20mm down the sides and round it for the dropouts and bolt it on tight.  If your fussy fill the gaps up with JB weld. And then use a good torque arm.

Very easy to make your own adapter.

I have looked through the net and found nothing specific to your needs.  So you may have to DIY.

Mine is 14mm diameter with 10mm flats. ;)

So a couple of 10 mm open-end wrenches should work for torque arms?
