« on: November 17, 2019, 04:58:12 PM »
IPAD generation 1, sudden loss of access to the forum... unread posts link. Started about 3-4 days ago... Works O.K. on Win 10 desktop.

Gone for good?  Work around or bad setting?  :(

Hi TC,

It works fine on my Windows 7 PC and also on my Android tablet.

Is it just the "unread posts" link that has stopped working, or are you experiencing other problems accessing the forum via your iPad?

Hi Alan,

Same error at...

https://goldenmotor.com/SMF/index.php (Home page) or even https://goldenmotor.com/SMF/index.php?board=1.0 (general discussions)

Been set this way forever. No other issues on any other websites.

Hi TC,

As far as I can tell, nothing has been recently updated or altered (regarding the SMF forum software) that would cause your specific problem.
I have also checked all of the 29 different IP addresses that you have used since joining this forum and there are no bans or restrictions related to any of them. There are no logged instances of any error messages connected with your user account either.

I therefore suspect that the problem you are experiencing has nothing to do with the forum itself, however, I am wondering whether the server that hosts the website may have recently updated its version of php, somehow making the GM website incompatible with your gen 1 iPad.
According to Wikki.php.net it would seem that a version change (RC 6) was listed for 14th November 2019, which seems to be around the same time as you first experienced the problem.
Perhaps the (GA) version will sort the problem on 28th November 2019 if RC 6 was the culprit.  :-\

I don't know whether Apple are still automatically updating older iPads, but that could be another contributing factor if they are.   ???
Perhaps a newer version of the ios (or an upgrade of the Safari browser) running on a Gen 1 iPad could cause this problem.

With my Windows 7 PC I have previously experienced regular problems when trying to login to one specific online banking website using Google Chrome. I would often encounter a "service unavailable" page with Chrome, but I was able to instantly login OK if I switched to using the Internet Explorer browser instead of Chrome.

I originally Googled the problem that I was experiencing, but did not find anything that was helpful, but after some trial and error, I found that I could also logon every time without experiencing the security problems if I used the Beta version of Google Chrome.
I later discovered that I could also log on easily with the non-Beta version of Chrome if I accessed the site in an "incognito window" instead of the default one.

It has been several months since I last experienced that particular problem, so I'm presuming that a Windows update, or a later version of Chrome, has eventually cured the access problem.

I finally know one I can help with.
You have to have https:// in front of the URL due to the changes the browsers have made.
The ?action=unread part of the URL is considered a form submission and you can only
do it over a secure connection.
https://goldenmotor.com/SMF/?action=unread will work.

Alan,

Thank you for your thorough and thoughtful response by checking on your end. And experiences.

The webmaster/server workings are above my paygrade, but I'll keep my fingers crossed on the server update.

My 'ol IPAD is stopped from any more IOS upgrades at 5.1.1. for several years.  And has been left behind by a few of it's original apps... as well as not being able to run the latest and greatest.  :'(

e-Imer,

Thank you for your input.  I'm sorry the screenshot may have been misleading as far as the web address is concerned. It gets cut off at the beginning for some reason... But the full address is.

https://goldenmotor.com/SMF/index.php?action=unread

I did try your somewhat different one, but with the same result. Cannot Open Page...  >:(

What does work is https://www.goldenmotor.bike/  which gets me to the store.
And https://goldenmotor.ca/

Bottom line... can't get to the forum on my IPAD Gen 1. But I'll be looking at it's settings a bit closer, and google a bit.

Hi TC,

Have you tried to install Google Chrome browser to see if it makes a difference?

Check out this video explaining how to install Google Chrome on early iPads, which might work on yours.  :-\

Goldenmotor.ca and goldenmotor.bike are run by Goldenmotor Canada, so they are probably hosted on a Canadian server, but goldenmotor.com belongs to GM China and could well be hosted on a Chinese server. If so, it's possible that an update on the Chinese server may be the cause of the problem.  :-\

Your inquiry reminded me that I do have another browser installed that I have to use for YouTube videos. It's call Terra. Started it up, typed in address and bingo! IN. So that's great!

Here's where it gets wonky. Went back to Safari, hit bookmarked link as usual. Bingo-In, just like usual.  :o ::) ???

Not that I'm complaining as I now have two access points... for now. But odd, very odd.

Thanks again for the recommendations!

Best Regards,
T.C.
