72 to 48
« on: September 27, 2020, 05:30:11 PM »
hi, everyone.
i just bought the 5kw motor with vec 300 controller. when I bought it I asked for the 72v setup. now I did some tests and saw I don't use even half the power. the question is : can I use it at 48V? if I'm not mistaken the controller can easily be set to 48V with the program. but the doubt is for the engine. is the 72 actually different from the 48 or is it the same engine and just change the parameters in the controller? thank you

Hi Fabio andto the forum.

The stator in the 72V motor has different windings to the 48V motor but it will run fine on 48V.

The main disadvantage with running a 72V motor on 48V will be that the maximum speed will be reduced by a third, so you'll only reach 2,839 rpm @ 48V instead of 4,259 rpm @ 72V.

If the controller can be set to run on 48V, and you are happy to accept a much lower top speed as well as reduced power, then running your 72V motor on 48V should not be a problem.
