VEC-500 problems
« on: July 23, 2019, 07:57:31 PM »

I recently acquired an 800 lb. eco-car and have installed a VEC-500  72 volt controller and 10KW BLDC motor.  I am using 4 sixty volt  Pacifica 2.4KWH batteries in parrallel.   The car goes 42 MPH and has a power at full throttle of 6KW.   I did not change the configuration of the controller yet, but left it just as it came in the box.    Since I want the motor to use its 10 KW power capacity, what is my next step?   Shall I use the USB connector and reconfigure the controller?  If so, what should I set the parameters to?  The batteries I am using are pouch batteries for the Pacifica Hybrid.   (I have lots to sell, by the way)   I can easily rebuild those batteries to be three 80 volt batteries in parallel  Would that give me the power I need?   Jory Squibb, Camden, Maine.

Hi Jory,

You will need to increase the current parameters using the USB programming lead to allow more power to be produced:

The maximum Battery current setting should be 150A (Assuming your battery pack can supply it).
The maximum Phase current setting should be 500A.

This will hopefully allow 9kW of power (150A@60V), but you may need to increase the battery voltage to 72V in order to achieve the full 10kW.

EDIT:
I have just been looking at the specifications of those batteries and it may be able to produce 10kW on a freshly charged pack as the maximum voltage is 67.2V.  (67.2V@150A = 10.080kW)

Assuming you have four of the 16 cell modules, it would make 3x 20 cell packs with 4 cells spare.
This would give you a nominal battery voltage of 74V that would be fully charged to 84V and discharged to 60V minimum.

you know i'm having so much trouble getting VEC500 working, i'm wondering if there is a simpler controller, maybe the square-wave controller by GM, or a controller make by another company....this VEC500 is sooooo complicated....jory

I am pretty sure that 15 blinks simply means the brake switch is activated, I presume it only blinks while the foot brake is applied?

If it still blinks with the brake pedal released, it could be a problem with the brake switch wiring.  :-\
