Magic pie build question
« on: October 27, 2009, 08:02:18 AM »

So, I'm waiting patiently for my slice of pie to arrive...

I believe the wheel doesn't come with any gears attached.

Do I need a screw on type freewheel/gears?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

The rear Magic Pie was supposed to come complete with a 6 speed screw on freewheel, so unless there has been a change in plans, it should be supplied.

OK, maybe the GM people could confirm whether it does or doesn't?

It was Hyena's review over here:

http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13662

that mentioned it didn't come with a sprocket.

But maybe that's not indicative of what's being sent out since the release date...

Thanks,
Jim

I think that was a mistake on the one I was shipped, it was rushed as a pre-release and things were left out.
Yours should ship with a 6 speed free wheel.

And to answer your other question, yes it is a thread/screw on type.

Is this new? When we bought on the 20th, Item 7 was promised.  I hope it is shipped, or I won't order anything else from you.

You said:

More Details on the Magic Pie:

A) It is a complete wheel set including:
1) Magic Pie Motor dual rimmed with Cast aluminum.
2) Integrated Cruise Controller
3) Regenerative Braking
4) Power Brake Levers
5) Thumb/Twist Throttle (Select One)
6) Cruise Control Button
7) 6Gear Freewheel Sprocket

Optional Item:
B) 140/160mm Disc Brakes (Optional with extra cost)

N.B:
1) Both the Front/Rear wheel have the same price.
2) The throttle controls are connected by wires as Bluetooth testing was not successful. When the Bluetooth battery was low, the motor cannot receive any further signal until battery was replaced.
3) It is direct drive, no gears.
4) There are disc brake mounting points for 140/160mm disc brakes, you need not purchase from us if you prefer to use your own disc brakes.
5) Supremely simple wire connection, wires exit the hub, so there's no need to worry about wire damage.
6) The regenerative braking is controlled by the brake levers.

I understand that you sold the whole kit as described.
You can change the price and what you sell in that kit from now on, but should honor what you promised when you took our money.

Thanks for the info.

I'm not too fussed that it doesn't come with the kit...they seem to cost less than a tenner & just want to have everything ready to go when the pie lands.

Is there a limit to the number of gears that will fit? Would a 7 speed like this fit?

Or is a 6 speed the limit?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

To fit a seven speed freewheel, you would need to spread the rear of your frame by approx 14mm and use 7mm spacers (or suitable washers) on both sides of the axle to ensure the wheel remains centred within the frame.

If you have a carbon fibre frame this will not be possible.
They don't advise bending aluminium frames either, although you might get away with it if you're lucky.

Jim,

The screw-on/freewheel design ran into problems with 8 sprockets.  7 should be OK if you're not too large.

Tell me this: If you order a 7 gear freewheel from ebay and they send you something else, would you fuss then?

On the Magic Pie order page:

http://www.goldenmotor.com/magicpie/magicpie.html

it doesn't say that it is included, nor is it shown in the main picture - so I wasn't expecting one. Just wanted to check the issues with size.

If you bought a pie at the special price then you have to expect "early adopter" issues to a certain extent...as long as the main product does its job then I'll be happy!

Cheers,
Jim

My HSB36-r came with 5 gear sproket.  Ive only used two gears and pedal quite a bit.  Oh my bad, my hall sensor took a perminant holiday so I used the all gears one day in two yers.

If you only have a 10ah lithium battery and do more distance than the pack is worth then I see the point of all the gears.

Bring it on
