Any recommendations for a bike light set
« on: November 09, 2011, 06:50:45 PM »
I'm looking for lights I can power from my battery pack with the help of a DC/DC converter.

Anyone know of any wired lights that can be purchased without battey packs included?

They could be general use multi LED lights, as long as the units are small, waterproof and can be zip tied on to bike

Andrew :)

hi buddy

you know about 5 years ago, I went and got a set of Hope lights, dual LED, and at the time, really had to justify it to myself....oh well if I cycle 20 times during the winter ill have made the money back etc etc.....( about 200  squids I think)

all I can say is wow, at 25-30mph in the dark, you need real light.....wet roads, stopping distances, you need big vision and these lights really do provide it.

then I take them off the pie bike, chuck em on cycling bike , just as good,

then get a headband and go running, and people mistake fat bloke running for a car....

On ebay, you can get good sets of led torches from hong kong for £20, with bike mount, 2 x lithium and charger ( which could be wired), and they are blindingly bright ( cree led, made for hong kong police), but the magic is in the lenses with a good set of lights, to get good all round coverage...:)

Cheers ginge.  I've got my eyes on some 'Magic shine' lights which can be got without a battery pack and can be easily plugged together and run at 7.4v.   I've ordered a DC/DC converter.

Can I just tap off the battery wires?

here's the parts I was thinking of getting.....

this has Y splitter cable.

There's also a one metre extension cable available for a few quid for the front light.

Ginge,  Any link available for the ebay Hong Kong police torches?

Andrew, for less than a tenner extra you cold have one of these 2400 Lumens triple light units, complete with 8.4v 6400mAh battery pack and charger:

Click for more information.

You could always re-sell the battery pack and charger on eBay if you really didn't want to use it.

2400 Lumens should be bright enough to see where you're going on the darkest of roads, even with your sunglasses on!

This all looks very interesting. I need some good lights to as I usually ride to work in the dark. I like the suggestions so far. I would definitely want to tap off my battery with an inverter or something. Don't really want to have to charge another battery separately.

I've been using that nigHt rider 900 lumen light since they first came out, it's still going strong. I'll be interested to see it connected to the lipo! I got it cause my Ay Up lights wide beams didn't Have enough grunt. On there own though for crap nights I have Ay Up spot beams on my helmet, they the small lipo they sell is so light you mount both on your lid no weight probs, they are superb for shining into the cabin of car driving twits who make like they haven't seen you until the inside their car flash up like the cop chopper has them, works every time.

Hiya Alan, thanks for the info. Sorry for the delayed reply/, I've been on a School trip to Paris over the past 5 days.  I'd seen the Cree x3 sets you've pointed out but decided to just go for one front lamp in the end.  2400 lumens would probably blind the blind! :D   1000 will be more than enough to shine at the on coming cars.   Saying that,  sitting here after a few 'swallies' i'm starting to wish I went for the full blinders!
