rim and spokes issues - 250W front mini motor
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:34:24 AM »
Hi,
as it is quite hard to center the original wheel precisely and keep it this way (spokes become loose), I think about building a new wheel using quality components (rim and spokes).
The original spokes have a diameter of 3mm, this is common for mopeds (2-stroke 50cc) here in Germany.
I would like to use heavy duty 2mm DT-Swiss 2mm instead with a Mavic rim. Are there any counter arguments.
Can you recommend a good combination (rim + spokes)
Regards
Peter

I would recommend that you do a search on the forum for "spoke" and/or "rim" and you will find links and recommendations.

Hiya!

I don't want to duplicate what I've written on other forums, so I invite you to look at this:

http://www.endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10425

I have used exactly what you are suggesting (DT Swiss 14ga stainless spokes with a Mavic 221 rim), and can guarantee you that the result is far superior to the components that ship with the wheel.  Actually, as a cost saving measure, I can recommend using an Alex DM18 rim (about half what I paid for the Mavics).  A solid performer for this application.

Cheers!

Hi,
of course I scoured the forum for information and came across your recent post.
I thought it might be a good idea to ask again (your post is from 2008) and I am grateful for your reply.
I do not know if Alex DM18 rims are available here in Germany...but Mavic.

Regards
Peter

You may be looking at the date I joined the forum - the conversation (which continues) over on Endless Sphere started just a few days ago, as did my posts :-).  There's another chap just joining the fray who is having his motor restrung into a Mavic 331 (700c).

Cheers!

Holes in the rim are drilled against center on Golden Motor whels

You must glue all of them

Spinn the Wheel here after to let the centrifugal force work on the glue

Loctite normal strength

Hi Svendus,
I "destroyed" the original wheel already and use good quality parts now to build a new wheel but I think your information is helpful for others!
