Title: Super G's New Project
Post by: GM Canada on April 05, 2011, 01:56:56 AM
Picked up a new bike today. Went to Canadian Tire to buy a few comfy seats and found a dual suspension downhill bike with steel forks on an aluminum frame. Has a disk brake on the front and mounts for one on the rear. Anyway I don't know when this bike will emerge. It is now hidden in my shed behind some large objects still in the box. Another time I am glad the wife doesnt read the forum. Funny thing the guy at Canadian Tire says if you take it unasembled you don't get a warranty. I figure with what I intend to do with it the warranty is void anyway.

Here is the website photo and details. Its on half price this week.

Wow, bargain :)  completely ideal with steel fork and disc fitment. Just make sure you remove the frame and wheel reflectors before going out in public on it.

CCM... All you need now is a matching Ice hockey Helmet ;D

Wowzers

Gary that frame/type is identical to the new version of my bike.
In Australia the brand is called "Cyclops" and they are around the same price too.

For the money they are just as good as any other in the same class, I cannot fault them and mine (is the older steel frame) sure has been through some tough times !!

What build are we thinking for this one?

And did you end up picking up that seat? I'm in an accessories mood obviously lol

For what Andrew say that type of front forks are the ones that will support a front pie. I am right?
If so I have to look for a similar bike for my son then.

First lOOk!

Stuck A pie on it to see how it looks :)

Stuck a Disk brake Activator on the back, Looks like it will line up with a disk nicely..

I was able to use the 7 speed freewheel that was on it by adding one GM washer inside. It fit perfectly no filing!

I think I am going to like this one! Hmm I think I say that every time don't I?

I think I'll keep this one real clean loooking, No GM buttons or brake levers, just a thumb throttle a seatpost rack and a small pouch under the seat for the wires.

I think pretty much every Canadian grew up riding CCM or Supercycle bike bought at Canadian Tire. They have always been a great bargain and the best thing about Canadian Tire is every item in the store goes on sale at one time or another.

Yes it certainly does have strong enough forks. I do plan on a dual pie setup gain. I need it for the hills on the way to work. This will be my new ride to work for sure. I need to treat the tush nicer on the way to work with dual suspension and a comfy seat.

What, not even a cup holder?

I'm thinking it could be time for a painted Pie, colour coordinated to match the bike so it looks like it was meant to be there.

And a painted rack and battery pack to match too. ;D

P.S. I just noticed it even has your "Super Gary" initials on the seat as well.

Haha, That is a good point! Can I be serious about riding a bike if it doesnt have a cup holder? I think not!

Well Gary, it's a funny change to see you with a 'big boys bike' and not a sensible 'gentleman's bike' ;)

lol "Big boys bike!"

I guess the cracks in the road have finally caught up with me! Time for some smooth riding. Beleive me I have thought about it alot and when I saw half price I could not resist! My wife has a full suspension mountain bike with a HBS 36v500w and it is so smooth, even on the sidewalks. This is her bike before I converted it.

Its true, I've had a couple Supercycles in my youth; and my friends had CCMs. Your bike looks good Gary. I predict upgrading to a dual suspension bike for my pies in the future; the roads here in North Bay are terrible. My back wheel literally bounces off the ground with all the pot holes, which reminds me to check my spokes before I ride home for lunch today. So how did you know it had steel forks? Was it in the ad?

I went to the automotive department. Picked up one of the long rods with the magnet on the end for picking up droped screws, nails bolts, etc. Walked it over to the bicycle department and tried to stick it to the forks. Yay, it stuck! If the forks are aluminum it wont stick.

More progress..

Today I added the second pie and the Cycle Analyst. I got most of the wiring done and its all in a pouch under the seat. Still need lights. Afterall it is going to be a serious commuter to work and its often dark. Took it for a quick boot. Decided I need upright handelbar extentions on this bike so I can sit more upright. Also did not like riding without cruise control so I added that. Another quick ride to test the cruise and decided its to dangerous to use cruise and not have power brake levers. So much for a simple clean build. Since my brake levers and gear changers were built into a single unit I had to replace them with separate gears shifters and the GM power brake levers. I don't know why people resist this. The new click shifting gear shifters were only 20 dollars. Then I was toying with the idea of a socond throttle on the upright bar so I can sit upright and still have throttle control. So what the heck I added a second throttle. Then I though it would be nice to have a brake lever on the upright on the other side. So I added that. My original Brakes serviced a front disk brake and a rear center pull brake. The additional lever will go to the Disk Brake I added to the back. So now I have three power brake levers and two throttles. Pictures to come tommorow when I get a bit more tinkering done.

Gary

Oh yeah, I also added a drink holder. I guess I am to predictable sometimes.

Gary this is sounding tops!

Funny, you have a similar compulsive nature as me :D haha

Have you changed the handlebars yet? Not sure if you have any BMX handlebars lying around but it was one of the best changes I made to my ride.

Hey about your rear activator - did you need to modify anything to make it fit? I'm having a little trouble making a bracket to fit, my rotors are 203mm so that makes it a little more difficult

good work mate

Gary, you can't say that you aren't tempted to slap a front 16" MP on the bob trailer?

C'mon.... I think this build deserves it :D do it do it do it

It's looking very nice Gary, but I have a few suggestions for you:

Apart from that, it seems to be coming along nicely.

Very compulsive. I regularily change my mind constantly while working on something. Most times for the better but not always! :D

My rear activator was no trouble but I had t replace the front with a GM activator as it was not adjustable enough.

I really don't need it, I am flying along as it is! :o

Besides I only have a rear 16 in stock and it doesn't fit. Good thing.

All good sugestions Alan. Adusting the fork hieght location is definatly a good one, You are an amazingly observant guy as usual! The handelbar tape and straightening and adjusting alot of things is yet to come. When there is time it will be done. I did my first hard and fast road ride to work today on it. it was great, fast and fun. But still alot of tweaking to go. I have been looking at new handle bars as Monkey suggested but none of the local bike shops stock anything that will fit other then bars that look pretty much the same. Does anyone have any magic finds on the internet? my bars afre very thick in the middle areas so I need something specific I guess.

I used a BMX headstem to fit the bars as the diameter differed.

Title: Re: Torque arms
Post by: Bikemad on April 12, 2011, 01:03:12 PM
So how did you know it had steel forks? Was it in the ad?

I went to the automotive department. Picked up one of the long rods with the magnet on the end for picking up droped screws, nails bolts, etc. Walked it over to the bicycle department and tried to stick it to the forks. Yay, it stuck! If the forks are aluminum it wont stick.

Gary, I've just been having a close look at your pictures and you might want to get your magnet out again as those dropouts on your forks might be cast alloy, as I think they look far too thick and chunky for steel (but you'll probably prove me wrong):

Although the fork stanchions (tubes) are obviously steel, I'm guessing those dropouts and sliders may not be.
When a hubmotor conversion is fitted, the dropouts are subjected to an incredible amount of spreading force from the flats on the axle as it tries to twist due to the amount of torque that has to be transmitted through it during acceleration and regenerative braking.

Alloy dropouts, although usually thick, are not very forgiving and a have a tendency to eventually crack due to fatigue (see attachment) and generally break off completely, rather than the slot just spreading open enough until the axle is able to spin.

A spinning axle will cause damage by ripping out the wires as it spins, but hopefully the axle will still remain located within in the widened dropouts due to the weight pushing down upon it.
However, a broken dropout may allow the axle (complete with front wheel) to fall out completely! :o

From past experience, riding a bike without a front wheel is almost guaranteed to end up with the rider meeting the road face first, :'( and this is why I would strongly recommend that a torque arm should always be fitted on a front hubmotor conversion.

Although steel dropouts are usually much stronger, they are not designed to withstand any torsional force from the axle whatsoever, and in extreme cases, metal fatigue can cause some steel dropouts to break at the joint where they are welded/brazed into the fork legs. ;)

Alan

P.S. I just noticed in the above picture that your front disc has been fitted in the wrong direction of rotation and is missing a fixing bolt too!

I think I like it better without the rear rack

Placed the batteries in the trailor

I adjusted the fork tubes as suggested By Alan

I move my cruise/horn button to the top of the left side upright bar. Much better location and it freed up a bit of room beside the 'refreshment holder. Also added some cushy grips on the uprights.

Added four Torque Arms

Went for a great ride and burned up some amps

One front MP external and one Rear MP internal. Both at default settings of 24 volts and 100 percent regen. Set and saved with the USB.

I feel like I am going into orbit sometimes :)

Nice bike! I bet you can fly over all the bump in the road that you were slowing down for in your videos with the dual mini motors. Was your wheel centered?Or did you have to add washers and spread fork out a little?I have the same shocks off supercycle hoolagan and wheel was off center 7mm.I tried adding washers but shock were binding and would not compress fully so I cut off drop outs and am making new ones with disk brake and torque arm mounts. Will weld back on with wheel centered.

Hey with the batteries, do you have 2 going to each? You would have mega range with that thing like 100kms plus people would be wondering how this bloke is rocketing around from a yellow trailor haha and sipping a coffee!!

anyways I like the blue its got a canadian thing to it too I reckon lol

Thanks for the comments on the bike. I think I am getting better at this. I am very proud of my last two builds! ;D

The bumps are smoother but now "Bob" is airborne alot of the time! :o

Thank you for that.

The batteries are just old 48v12ah batteries that are done. But if you hook them all together it is heavy but lots of power. They will have to do until I get my lifePO4 48v20. Using rollins a few times was a real teaser. I figured once you saw that picture you would jump out the nearest window! :o
