VEC300 with 5kW motor
Bikemad:
Hi Charles,
The Brown and Yellow wires are connected to the switch in the throttle.
You can use these to operate the eLock function of the controller, or use a separate key switch etc. if you prefer.
--- Quote from: Bikemad on March 15, 2023, 11:44:51 PM ---Unfortunately, it looks like your controller is currently programmed for a boat style throttle, which is not very helpful for a motorcycle.
You will need the USB programming cable and the PI-800 programming software to change the Throttle mode selection setting from 0:Hyperbola to 1:Linear.
If that doesn't fix the problem, try changing the Speed throttle type setting from 0:Hall effect throttle to 1:Potentiometer throttle (or vice versa).
The correct combination of the above settings should make your throttle respond as expected.

Although the thumb throttle is a Hall Sensor device, it should also work with the controller's throttle mode selection set to Potentiometer as well.

Hello All,
I'm still struggling with this. I'm getting the 12 beeps (throttle error) even with the new purchased thumb throttle previously indicated. Is there anything that can be corrected in the controller settings that is obvious?
Also I'm also trying to slow the start up spin speed to as slow as possible and max rmp. Most sailboat motors max out at about 2200 rpm because anything beyond that the propeller just slips.
Bikemad:
Hi Charles,
Check if the 12 beep error code occurs at maximum or minimum throttle.
If it only occurs at maximum throttle, you will need to increase the Throttle maximum allowed voltage (V) until the error no longer occurs.
If it only occurs when the throttle is fully released, you may have to lower the Throttle lowest allowed voltage (V) until the error no longer occurs.
You may be able to restrict the maximum rpm by setting the Rated motor speed (rpm) to the required value and also setting the Forword Speed ratio (%) to 100%.
If you don't have a 3 speed switch connected, I would set the 3-Gears enable setting back to 0:Disable.
I would also expect the Number of pole pairs to be set to 4 (not 5) as the 5kW motor only has 8 magnets (4 pole pairs).

Hello Again,
The controller software is still baffling me. I'm now building my 7th throttle.
My test is the hall style thumb throttle purchased a while ago. It works as a tester but not practical for my Boat.
I performed some bench tests using a USB 5 V as my voltage source outputting at 5.08 V.
Thumb throttle bench test results:
PositionBlack–Red (?, V)Black–Green (?, V)Red–Green (?, V)Idle (0%)1.14?k?, 5.08?V14.00?k?, 0.84?V11.80?k?, 4.24?VFull (100%)1.16?k?, 5.08?V13.96?k?, 4.33?V11.74?k?, 0.74?V
For reference here is a photo my mouser potentiometer throttle set up with the pullup/limiting resistors:

The little switch closes the contacts for reverse. I've tested reverse and that function works fine.

Now on the boat:
* tested the thumb throttle; it works fine so no cabling faults or wiring errors.
* powered off the controller, swapped out the thumb throttle and swapped in the Mouser Pot
* changed from Hall Effect to Potentiometer mode and got the Multiple beeps for throttle error.
* mucked with some of the throttle settings based on my bench tests.
* Some of the settings have rules based on background calculations that don't allow out of spec values
* I am reluctant to put a voltage meter at the throttle assembly in the live system.
* tested wire run individually with no loss of continuity
Here are the initial controller settings I used:
I mucked about, adjusting the settings and this is where I ended up:
Here are the full controller settings:
I'm still not seeing something. Help Please?
Bikemad:
Hi Charles,
I would first start by setting the Speed throttle type back to 0:Hall Sensor (even though you are using a potentiometer) and see if it helps.
As your throttle signal voltage is only 0.56V at idle, and 4.3V at full throttle, I would suggest trying the following settings:
Make sure the settings are saved to the controller by clicking on the Download icon:
You can check that they have been saved correctly by then clicking the Upload icon to read the saved parameters back from the controller.
If the controller's +5V supply is lower than the USB power supply that you have been testing with, it may result in lower throttle signal voltages.
You may be able to check the exact throttle signal voltage when powered from the controller by temporarily joining the brake wires to ensure the motor will not run and then measuring the voltage between the Black and Green wires on the throttle connector.
