Thanks for the extra info. The motor is totally seized. I have removed the clutch and tri-gears. I freed two of those but one still needs some work. The plate on the cassette side was seized and its freed up now.
The other bearings are stuck solid. They are soaking in penetrating oil. I have attached some pics.

After watching a teardown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-wjHhTsgww of a similar looking controller, I think I'll chicken out and cut my losses.

if the sensors still have kohms in reading and similar values then I guess you save yourself sometime by not doing it :) but its always better to have new ones as they tend to easily die (but it will be mostly reading in ohms at that point.

Hi andto the forum.

I don't know what's inside the EZ A48400 but I'm guessing it will be too big to fit inside the Pie.

Previous power upgrades for the MPII involved rewiring the motor to use an external Infineon controller. Check out this thread for more information.

Although it may well be possible to use the stator/axle as a ground connection, it is unlikely to help very much if you end up using an external controller, as this would only require a thin ground wire for the Hall Sensors.

I think your assessment is right. I will disassemble the motor. Is it worth changing out the hall effect devices while Im in there?
Thanks for the detailed illustration.

The wheel will not rotate backward at all.

If you cannot rotate the wheel backwards, it sounds like the motor may be seized. With the minimotors, the freewheel mechanism (unidirectional clutch) allows you to rotate the wheel in the forwards direction freely without turning the motor, but the wheel should turn the motor when you try to rotate it backwards.
If the motor does not turn, it may be a seized bearing or a buildup of rust between the rotor magnets and the stator assembly that is jamming it solid.

As your motor is not turning, there is not much point in trying another controller until the motor has been freed off first.  ;)

Here is a drawing showing the location of the bearings:

Check out this post to see what's inside a minimotor.

I want to know what the insides of the A48400 look like to estimate if it can be implanted instead of the old controller. Either way, I had to open my MP2 up because the insulation of the wires exiting the axle was cut clean to the copper. Also wondering if the stator armature can be used as ground, since that would save significant space in the axle conduit and allow for a thicker + wire, with reinforced insulation.

hi, finaly I did not change any values in my smartpie5 setting and use it with the factory-defaults. it runs fine since years (365 days summer/winter).
maybe there are some better motors for playing around with the settings (like my bafang bbs2 and hd) but the smartpie5 is a good solution for riding every day to work in my velomobil without any problems.

Reviving this old thread, because I want to ask if you know how I can get ahold of the MP5 hub’s drive side shell, in order to convert the 135mm front hub motor to a rear one. This hub is much too powerful to use up front.

Both the fork and rear dropouts of my bike are 135mm spaced, and the front disc brake mount is spaced the same as the rear as well.

Is it simply a matter of replacing the drive side shell? How can I get ahold of one?

Thanks in advance

in 2025, hitting this mis reading icons problem, :DD thanks @Alan again and @Hannes for the question.
