General Discussions / 5KW motor noise
« Last post by B0bD on Today at 06:50:38 PM »
I have a 5kw water cooled 48V motor with a VEC300 controller, connected to a 14 cell LFP battery, powering a converted 9.9 Evinrude outboard.
It works fine but it is really noisy.
3-4 feet away, under no load, with the engine cover off, I measure up to 90 dB.
This is with the motor disconnected from the outboard motor gearbox.

Is this noise level unusual?

Is it possible for a mistake in the wiring to cause excessive motor noise?

IThe noise drops about 10dB when I put on the heavily insulated engine cover, but even 80 dB is much noisier than I would expect.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

Magic Pie & Smart Pie Discussions / Re: MP EDGE: bearing sizes?
« Last post by Thingamajig on Today at 01:59:32 PM »
Just thought i'd come back with an update.

The large wheel bearing is definitely not the same size. Picture for comparison:

Top is the Magic Pie Edge large bearing (brake/controller side) bottom is the one recommended here.

I measured my MP Edge bearing size to be: 85x110x13 and NOT the 85x120x18 as recommended.

Not a big deal, can easily return and exchange -- just thought i'd update here as the infographic is not applicable to the MP Edge hub.

The other bearing size however is 100% correct (The small one/gear side) at least for a Freewheel type hub which is what mine is.

Hopefully this helps others. Thanks again for all the help.

I have not seen any motor plates or dot marked serial numbers on any of the pictures/videos of the HPM5000 motors that I have seen, just a sticker with a date at the top and what I presume to be the part number of the motor at the bottom:

Perhaps someone who has one of these motors can clarify whether or not they actually have a unique serial number on each motor.

Is there a serial number or motor plate/number on 5kw BLDC motor? I would have to fill out the registration application for my sailboat.

If you have the standard (Non-cassette) version of the Edge, I'm pretty sure that it uses the same bearing as the MPIII, 4 & 5:

However, if yours is the cassette version, the large bearing should still be the same (6917) but the single 6302 bearing has been replaced by two smaller bearings within the free hub as shown below:

I recommend using a 6901-2RS instead of the 6901-ZZ for the freehub as the rubber seals should help to keep the grease in and the dirt and water out.  ;)

I suggest that you try searching eBay for a 6917-2RS bearing and see what you can find.

So my MP: Edge has developed a odd sound when running. Sorta like a loose bearing sound.

I disassembled the hub, and noticed the small bearing was alright, smooth motion, no noise or gritty feeling in it's movement.

The large one however had a bit of noise to it, and was a bit gritty feeling in it's motion -- due replacing it seems.

However, my idiot ass didn't write down the names of the bearing sizes, and from what i've found online replacements are costly (like, >$100 costly) which is just a bit crazy to me.

In the meantime I re-greased the noisy bearing in the hopes to get continued use from it for a few months. I do need to source a replacement though so if anyone can tell me what size this bearing is and/or a source with a reasonable price i'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

General Discussions / Re: EZ Kontrol Single Axis Throttle configuration

Hi andto the forum.

With the VEC500 controllers you have to set the Throttle mode selection setting to Hyperbola using the USB programming cable and software for the controller to work with a boat style throttle, but as I have no experience with the EZ-Kontrol controllers, I don't know what programming options are available from within the EZ-Tune Android App.

Apparently, "There are hundreds of programmable control parameters for you to play around and fine tune your drive system to satisfy your expectations!" However, if you can't find the required setting for a boat style throttle you may have to contact your supplying dealer and ask them.

General Discussions / EZ Kontrol Single Axis Throttle configuration

Hi everyone,

I am trying to build a throttle for an electric boat motor. I want to use the following Hall Sensor for the throttle:

VISHAY
981HE0B4WA1F16

It provides a 0.5-4.5V analog signal.

Is there a way to configure the EZ Kontrol Controller (A48 500) in away so that 2.5-4.5V is forward and 2.5-0.5V is reverse?

If this is not possible, how can I make the controller change rotation direction when the throttle is pulled to reverse?

Thanks and have a nice weekend!

Is it possible to repair? are there any schematics for these controllers about?

Unfortunately I have not seen any schematics for the internal circuits of this controller, and it is unlikely to be easy to repair because the two circuit boards are typically potted in a silicone gel type compound which makes it very difficult to dismantle the controller to allow any failed components to be replaced:

I see that the Magic Pie Edge controller is still in stock at Golden Motor Canada/North America.
I'm pretty sure that it is basically the same controller as the Smart Pie 5 and Magic Pie 5 but with slightly different firmware.

Alan

Ah thats a real shame. I actually found the potting quite easy to thwart and have full access to both the top and lower layer PCB.
