Moving wheel problem
« on: May 25, 2016, 05:26:00 AM »
Hi everybody,

I tried to search for the same problem I have, but didn't find anything.

So, I have Smart Pie, rear. and I noticed that wheel is moving, to left and right.
here you can see what I'm talking about.

Should I change some bearings, or something?

Thanks.

Hi andto the forum.

Have a good look at the centre of the hub and check for radial and/or lateral movement in relation to the axle as indicated by A and C in the following picture:

If the movement in the A direction is not too bad (and the bearings are still running smooth and quiet) you should be able to remove the right hand side cover and add a suitable shim/washer between the bearing and the stator to remove the play.
Mark the cover with a piece of tape in line with the tyre valve to ensure it goes back in exactly the same position it was removed from.

If the bearing cannot be easily removed from the shaft, and alternative option would be to form a circle from a piece of piano wire to fit inside the bearing housing on the cover which would press against the outer race of the bearing to remove the excessive play.

Check out this post for further information on bearing preload.
