Inboard electric motor gear reduction solutions ?
« on: March 14, 2016, 01:45:45 AM »
I am considering installing an electric inboard engine on a old 24" sailboat --- with a shaft and folding propeller.

As far as I can see Golden Motor has the perfect engine for this kind of job.

However as far as I can understand I also need a gear reduction to increase torque.   2:1 or 2,5:1 is what I have read other people are using.

Looking at how other people does this it's two wheels and a belt on a plate - probably to reduce risk of engine damage if something hits the propeller and the shaft gives a bump to the engine.

Where can I find and purchase such a gear reduction at a reasonable price ?

Or perhaps one has to build the thing from a plate, 2 wheels and a belt?

I did see a price on one website - it was USD 660. I am on a tight budget so was wondering if others had any input on this part.

I am attaching a few images of the solutions I have located so far.

....as you can probably tell I have absolutely no experience in how to do this kind of thing ?   :)
